Maths Circle

Math Circles originated in Eastern Europe, particularly in Russia, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as an extracurricular activity for talented students, often led by university professors. The tradition spread and evolved, becoming a prominent educational practice.

There are hundreds of Maths Circles in USA, Russia, Bulgaria, Canada but very few in India which are run by TIFR, RRI, ICTS, IISER Bhopal, IIT Palakkad and Raising A Mathematician Foundation

History of Maths Circles

It was more than 100 years ago that Maths Circle originated in Hungary, spread to Russia, some parts of Europe and it reached the USA about 25 years ago. Maths Circles have been instrumental in identifying and nurturing talented students in Mathematics who have later went on to win medals in IMO and become Mathematicians. Maths Circles have a direct impact on the students' world view of Mathematics at a very impressionable age when they get to interact and learn from Mathematicians.

In India, the Maths Circle initiative was started by ICTS in 2021. Today, there are Maths Circles run by a few more institutes in India such as IIIT-Delhi, IISER Bhopal, Raman Research Institute, TIFR Mumbai, IIT Palakkad and Raising A Mathematician Foundation.
